What is Kamagra?

Kamagra is a brand name used in some countries for products that contain sildenafil, the same active ingredient found in Viagra. It is promoted for the management of erectile dysfunction in adult men by helping achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.

In the United States, sildenafil for ED is available only by prescription under FDA-approved brands and generics. Kamagra itself is not an FDA-approved medicine in the USA.

How Kamagra (sildenafil) works

Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. By blocking PDE5, it helps relax smooth muscle and increase blood flow to erectile tissue in the penis when sexual arousal is present. It does not increase libido and does not cause an erection without sexual stimulation.

Typical use and timing

Use only as directed by a licensed clinician. Information below is general and not a substitute for medical advice.

  • Onset and duration: effects usually begin in about 30 to 60 minutes and can last around 4 to 6 hours.
  • Food effect: a high-fat, heavy meal can delay the onset of action.
  • Dose frequency: do not take more than one dose in a 24-hour period unless your prescriber explicitly instructs otherwise.
  • Typical prescribed range in the USA for sildenafil for ED: 25 mg, 50 mg, or 100 mg taken as needed before sexual activity. Start dose and adjustments depend on efficacy, tolerability, kidney and liver function, and interacting medications.

Never combine Kamagra or sildenafil with other ED medications on the same day unless approved by your prescriber.

Precautions

Before using any sildenafil-containing product, tell your health care provider about your full medical history, including cardiovascular disease, prior heart attack or stroke, chest pain, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, high or low blood pressure, bleeding disorders, stomach ulcers, sickle cell disease, leukemia, multiple myeloma, Peyronie disease or other penile deformities, eye conditions (such as retinitis pigmentosa, non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy), kidney or liver disease, and any allergies.

  • Avoid alcohol excess, as it can worsen dizziness and reduce the ability to achieve an erection.
  • Rise slowly from sitting or lying positions to reduce lightheadedness.
  • If you use recreational nitrates (such as amyl nitrite, "poppers") or prescription nitrates, do not take sildenafil.
  • If vision changes, sudden vision loss, ringing in the ears, or hearing loss occur, stop use and seek urgent care.

Who should not use it

  • Anyone using any form of nitrate therapy (for example, nitroglycerin tablets, sprays, patches, or isosorbide dinitrate/mononitrate) due to the risk of a severe drop in blood pressure.
  • People with a known allergy or hypersensitivity to sildenafil or any component of the product.
  • Individuals advised by their clinician to avoid sexual activity for medical reasons.
  • Minors under 18 years of age.

Possible side effects

Most are mild to moderate and temporary. Not everyone experiences side effects.

  • Common: headache, facial flushing, nasal stuffiness, indigestion or upset stomach, dizziness.
  • Less common: diarrhea, back pain, nausea, visual color tinge or sensitivity to light.
  • Rare but serious: prolonged or painful erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism), sudden vision loss, sudden hearing decrease or loss, severe allergic reaction, chest pain, fainting. Seek emergency care immediately if these occur.

Drug and substance interactions

Do not combine sildenafil with nitrates or guanylate cyclase stimulators. Other medicines may raise or lower sildenafil levels. Always provide your pharmacist and clinician a complete list of your medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.

Examples of interacting agents (selection):

  • HIV medications: ritonavir, indinavir, atazanavir, saquinavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, darunavir.
  • Antifungals: ketoconazole, itraconazole.
  • Antibiotics: erythromycin, clarithromycin.
  • Blood pressure and prostate medicines: doxazosin, terazosin, prazosin.
  • Other: cimetidine, bosentan, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, rifampin, rifabutin, efavirenz, tipranavir, nevirapine, fosamprenavir.

Herbal and OTC items to discuss with your clinician: yohimbine, certain pre-workout products, and any nitrate-containing remedies.

Missed dose

Sildenafil for ED is generally taken only as needed before sexual activity, so a missed dose does not apply. Do not take extra doses to compensate.

Overdose

Symptoms may include severe dizziness or fainting, chest pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, or persistent, painful erection. If an overdose is suspected, call emergency services or contact a poison control center right away.

Similar and alternative medications

Other FDA-approved options for erectile dysfunction in the USA include:

  • Tadalafil (Cialis) - longer duration (up to 36 hours), available as daily low dose or as needed.
  • Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn) - similar onset and duration to sildenafil; Staxyn is an orally disintegrating tablet.
  • Avanafil (Stendra) - quicker onset in some users, may be effective in 15 to 30 minutes.
  • FDA-approved sildenafil products - brand Viagra and multiple generics with the same active ingredient as Kamagra.

Non-oral alternatives when pills are unsuitable:

  • Alprostadil intracavernosal injections (Caverject) or intraurethral suppository (Muse).
  • Vacuum erection devices and constriction rings.
  • Penile implants for refractory cases.

Choice depends on medical history, concurrent medications, personal preference, cost, and side effect profile. Discuss with a licensed clinician.

Approximate price comparisons in USD

Prices vary widely by pharmacy, insurance coverage, dosage, brand vs generic, and use of coupons. The figures below are rough estimates at common U.S. retail or reputable mail-order pharmacies as of recent market ranges; your cost may differ substantially.

  • Generic sildenafil (USA, FDA-approved): about $1 to $10 per 25 mg to 100 mg tablet with discount programs; higher without discounts.
  • Brand Viagra (USA): often $70 to $90 or more per 25 mg to 100 mg tablet.
  • Tadalafil generic: roughly $1 to $8 per tablet (2.5 mg to 20 mg), depending on quantity and discounts.
  • Avanafil (Stendra): commonly $20 to $50 per tablet.
  • Vardenafil generic: about $2 to $10 per tablet.
  • Kamagra: not legally marketed in the USA; international websites may advertise $1 to $3 per 100 mg tablet, but quality, authenticity, legality, and safety are uncertain.

Lower prices may be available through legitimate U.S. mail-order pharmacies with a valid prescription. Be cautious with unusually cheap offers and unverified online sellers.
