What Cialis Super Active is, and how it works
Cialis Super Active is a marketed softgel or capsule form of tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor used for erectile dysfunction. The softgel format is promoted by some vendors for potentially quicker absorption compared with conventional film tablets. While individual onset may vary, tadalafil in general begins working within 15 to 45 minutes for many users and can remain effective for up to about 36 hours when used as needed.
Important USA note: in the United States, only FDA-approved tadalafil products are legally marketed. These include brand Cialis and FDA-approved generics in standard strengths. Products sold as Super Active or similar enhanced versions are not FDA-approved. See USA legal and access for details.
As with all PDE5 inhibitors, sexual stimulation is required for an erection to occur. Tadalafil does not increase testosterone or sperm production and is not an aphrodisiac.

How to take it
Follow your clinician's instructions. General guidance for on-demand use of tadalafil:
- Take only once per 24 hours as needed prior to anticipated sexual activity.
- Typical as-needed dose range is 10 mg to 20 mg. Some people may respond to 5 mg.
- Swallow with water. Food has minimal effect, but a very high fat meal can delay onset.
- If using a softgel or capsule marketed as Super Active, some users report earlier onset; start with the lowest effective dose.
Caution about strengths: 40 mg is higher than the usual maximum on-demand dose for tadalafil and may increase adverse effects. Do not exceed the dose recommended by your prescriber.
Daily low-dose tadalafil (2.5 to 5 mg once daily) is an FDA-approved alternative regimen; do not combine daily dosing with on-demand dosing. Ask your clinician if a daily schedule is appropriate for you.
Precautions
Before using tadalafil, tell your healthcare professional about all medical conditions and medicines. The risk of lightheadedness or a drop in blood pressure can be higher with dehydration, alcohol, hot environments, fever, or strenuous exercise. Elderly patients may be more sensitive to hypotension and interactions.
- Seek urgent care for painful or prolonged erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism).
- Use caution if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, stomach ulcers, bleeding disorders, or blood cell conditions such as sickle cell disease, leukemia, or multiple myeloma.
- If you have visual changes or vision loss, stop the medicine and get medical help promptly.
- Avoid heavy alcohol intake; it can increase dizziness and lower blood pressure.
For conditions that make sexual activity risky, see Who should not use it.
Who should not use it
Do not use tadalafil if any of the following apply:
- You use any nitrate medication or nitric oxide donors, including nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate or mononitrate, nitroprusside, or recreational poppers containing amyl or butyl nitrate.
- Your clinician has advised you to avoid sexual activity due to heart problems such as unstable angina, recent heart attack, recent stroke, uncontrolled hypertension, severe hypotension, or serious arrhythmias.
- You are hypersensitive to tadalafil or any component of the product.
- You have severe liver impairment or certain rare eye disorders such as retinitis pigmentosa.
If you are unsure, consult your healthcare provider before use. Cross-reference interactions in Drug and food interactions.
Possible side effects
Commonly reported effects are usually mild and temporary. If any symptom is severe or persistent, contact a healthcare professional.
- Headache, flushing, nasal congestion or runny nose
- Indigestion or heartburn, upset stomach
- Back pain or muscle aches
- Dizziness, lightheadedness, drowsiness
- Blurred vision or color tinge changes
Serious but rare: chest pain, fainting, sudden vision or hearing loss, or priapism (erection lasting more than 4 hours). Stop the medicine and seek immediate medical help if these occur.
Drug and food interactions
Medications that can cause dangerous interactions with tadalafil include but are not limited to:
- All nitrates or nitric oxide donors, including recreational poppers
- Alpha blockers for prostate or blood pressure such as doxazosin, terazosin, prazosin, or alfuzosin; if co-prescribed, careful dose timing and monitoring are needed
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors that raise tadalafil levels, for example ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, erythromycin, ritonavir, or indinavir
- Some antihypertensives, which may add to blood pressure lowering effects
- Other ED medicines such as sildenafil, vardenafil, or avanafil
Grapefruit or grapefruit juice can increase tadalafil exposure in some individuals. Share a full list of all prescription drugs, OTC products, and supplements with your clinician and pharmacist.
Missed dose and overdose
On-demand use: take only when needed; there is no scheduled dose to miss.
Possible overdose signs include severe dizziness, fainting, chest pain, prolonged or painful erection, and persistent vision changes. If you suspect overdose, call emergency services or seek immediate medical care.
Storage
Keep in a tightly closed container at room temperature, ideally 68 to 77 F (20 to 25 C), protected from moisture and direct light. Store out of reach of children and pets.
Alternatives and similar medications
If tadalafil is not suitable or available, clinicians may consider other FDA-approved ED therapies. Discuss these options to find the best fit for your health profile, timing needs, and cost.
- Sildenafil (Viagra, generics) - Onset typically 30 to 60 minutes, duration up to 4 to 6 hours. Food, especially high fat meals, can delay onset.
- Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn ODT) - Similar onset and duration to sildenafil; some formulations dissolve on the tongue.
- Avanafil (Stendra) - Faster onset in many users, sometimes as early as 15 minutes; duration around 6 hours.
- Daily tadalafil 2.5 to 5 mg - A steady-state option for men who prefer spontaneity or have frequent sexual activity; do not combine with on-demand tadalafil.
- Non-oral options - Vacuum erection devices, intraurethral alprostadil, or intracavernosal injections (e.g., alprostadil, trimix) under specialist care.
Note on Super Active and similar enhanced-branded products: many are not FDA-approved forms. Consider verified FDA-approved tablets or legitimate compounded prescriptions when appropriate and legal. See USA legal and access.
Typical USA prices (USD)
Prices vary widely by pharmacy, insurance, dose, and discount programs. The following rough ranges are for context only:
- Generic tadalafil 5 mg daily, 30 tablets: about $8 to $40 cash price with common discount cards; subscription telehealth plans may offer $15 to $30 per month.
- Generic tadalafil 10 to 20 mg, 10 tablets: roughly $10 to $50 depending on pharmacy and coupons.
- Brand Cialis 20 mg, 8 to 10 tablets: often $300 to $500 or more without insurance.
- Unapproved Super Active softgels sold by overseas vendors: advertised $1 to $3 per capsule; quality, legality, and authenticity are uncertain. Importation may be denied or products seized.
For reliable pricing, compare local pharmacies using accredited price tools, verify FDA approval of the product, and consider generic tadalafil when clinically appropriate.
USA legal and access information
In the United States, tadalafil for ED is a prescription-only medication regulated by the FDA.
- Prescription requirement: a valid prescription from a US-licensed clinician is required for purchase at US pharmacies, including mail order and telehealth platforms.
- Approved products: FDA-approved strengths include tablets such as 2.5 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg. Products branded as Super Active or gelcaps are not FDA-approved and are not legally marketed in the USA.
- Personal importation: importing prescription drugs that are not FDA-approved is generally prohibited. Customs may seize shipments. Limited personal importation discretion exists but is narrow and should not be relied upon for routine access.
- Telemedicine: legal in most states, and many platforms can prescribe tadalafil after an online visit when medically appropriate. Identity and age verification are required; tadalafil is not a controlled substance.
- Counterfeits: buying from unverified websites increases the risk of fake or contaminated products. Use pharmacies verified by NABP programs such as .pharmacy or VIPPS legacy lists.
If you have cardiovascular disease or other risk factors, your clinician may recommend testing or evaluation before prescribing. For contraindications, review Who should not use it.
Quick answers to common questions
- When should I take it? Many people take tadalafil 15 to 45 minutes before sexual activity. Some prefer taking it a few hours earlier to allow flexibility.
